Do you know how to breathe properly?

Updated: Oct 22

Good breathing feels good and reflects in our overall well-being. How we breathe shows how we exist in our bodies. On average, we breathe about 20,000 times a day, and when we're healthy, it's an automatic, natural process. It’s easy to take breathing for granted.

However, as we age, our ability to breathe efficiently decreases. While breathing is automatic, many people do it inefficiently without realising it.

We all know that stress, shock, or high blood pressure can cause shallow breathing. But few of us realise how every emotional experience—whether excitement, love, concentration, or trauma—affects our breath. Shallow breathing reduces oxygen levels, weakens posture, tightens muscles, and slows metabolism.

Tight muscles can compress bones, and poor posture or restrictive clothing further limits our breathing capacity. A stiff thoracic spine makes it harder for the diaphragm to contract, shifting breathing to superficial muscles. How we sit, how long we sit, and the position of our head all impact the quality of our breathing. In fact, poor breathing habits are often visible from the outside!

In Method Putkisto, the body is trained to breathe correctly and efficiently. By mastering breathing, you can regulate your nervous system and manage emotional states.

Proper breathing releases energy and supports health, flexibility, and overall vitality. With the right techniques, you can increase strength, reshape your body, and boost metabolism.

Method Putkisto’s deep breathing techniques are highly effective, helping to correct even long-standing issues.

Breathing training isn’t just about how often we inhale and exhale; it’s about balancing activity and passivity. Through visualisation and mindful breathing, we connect with our body's core functionality, achieving a calm, meditative state.

Method Putkisto's breathing techniques combined with body movements and stretching create a dynamic through which the contours of the body are balanced and the shape of the body is beautified.

Here's what we practice at Marja’s Club:

  • MP Breath of the Rising Sun - improved complexion: Oxygen is essential for a good complexion. Poor breathing technique shows on our skin and is felt as fatigue. With this technique, we make our skin glow.

  • MP Crescent breathing - toning: An often surprising and unexpected result of Method Putkisto training is that the skin shrinks and the tissue becomes smaller in size. The skin supports our muscles and effective breathing lifts both our body and our face. The swelling goes away and is replaced by firmness.

  • MP Full Moon Breathing - Posture = confidence = beauty: Breathing works as a pump that takes care of our body when stretching is combined with breathing. Through this, breathing corrects posture, improves mobility and increases strength. What we often don't expect is its surprising effect on the contours of our body, which visibly improve, our posture improves and the essence becomes stronger. This instantly adds elegance, sleekness, length and so much more to our look.

  • MP Breathing of the Setting Sun - Removing stress rejuvenates - Stress disrupts the breathing mechanism, tightening the throat and silently accelerating aging. It raises cortisol and stress hormone levels, leading to neck and shoulder tension, fatigue, and strain. Learning to regulate your breathing helps manage stress and aids recovery. By controlling the diaphragm, you can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which deepens breathing, reduces stress, and enhances overall well-being. Deep breathing also unlocks creativity, calms the mind, improves concentration, sleep quality, and relaxation. It stimulates the Vagus nerve, which boosts the immune system and supports overall health.

Breathing is a skill worth practicing, it's a beauty care tool! Are you ready to breathe yourself into better dimensions and strength well?

The skill of diaphragmatic breathing is not self-evident. It's hard to feel the action of the diaphragm, but you can feel its movement and above all when it works correctly - AH! and it has a good effect!

In training, a new way of working on posture, mobility, and core strength opens up for you. Method Putkisto teaches you to know your own body, to perceive even its blind spots, and this way you get a feel for the muscles, which usually remain shapeless and therefore the understanding of their importance is low and so is the motivation to treat them.
