Breathe Yourself Beautiful

What if beauty begins with something you do thousands of times every day? Simply breathing.
Breathe Yourself Beautiful
Beauty is not only what we see in the mirror. It is vitality. It is posture. It is presence. It is the softness that returns to the face when unnecessary tension disappears. It is feeling comfortable inside your own body.
And sometimes the journey back to that feeling begins with just one breath. Not a bigger breath. Not a harder breath. A better breath.
I believe breathing is part of beauty. Not beauty that is applied from the outside, but the kind that comes from feeling open, balanced and alive within your own body.
Your breath may shape you more than you think
Your diaphragm is a powerful muscle, yet most of us barely think about it. When the diaphragm moves freely, the ribcage can move more naturally and the deep abdominal muscles can work together more effectively. Posture becomes easier. The neck and shoulders don’t have to work so hard.
And something else happens. Your whole presence can change.
Your chest opens. Your head becomes lighter on the spine. Your face softens. Movement becomes more fluid.
You don’t simply look different. You feel different.

Look at yourself for a moment
Is your head in line with your spine?
Are your shoulders relaxed?
Can your ribs move when you breathe?
Is there space around your waist and abdomen – or are you holding yourself in?
Are you clenching your jaw?
And perhaps the most interesting question: where in your body can you actually feel your breath?
Many of us spend hours sitting, looking at screens, rushing between appointments and carrying tension without even noticing it. The body adapts. The head moves forward. The chest becomes less mobile. The muscles around the neck and shoulders begin helping with a job that should be led by the diaphragm. Breathing becomes smaller, and so does the space within us.
Don’t breathe more. Breathe better.
Breathwork doesn’t need to be about counting endless inhalations and exhalations. It is about awareness.
Can you feel your diaphragm moving?
Can your ribs expand?
Can you breathe without lifting your shoulders?
What happens to your posture when you exhale?
What happens to your face?
What happens to your thoughts?
Conscious, slower breathing can help the body move towards a calmer state. It becomes a way of understanding your body. As the breath settles, we often begin to notice tension we had stopped noticing altogether. That is where breathing becomes much more than air moving in and out of the lungs.
The Finnish approach to breathing
Method Putkisto was born in Finland and has sometimes been described internationally as ‘Finnish yoga’. But it has its own philosophy. At the heart of the method are six deep-breathing techniques that lead you to understand that breathing, posture and movement cannot truly be separated.
We don’t force the body into position. We create space for the diaphragm to move, which lengthens the spine. We rarely think about breathing, because it happens automatically from the moment we are born. Yet how we breathe can influence how we stand, how we move, how we recover – and even how we carry ourselves into the world.
Breathe Yourself Beautiful with Marja
My new six-week Breathe Yourself Beautiful programme in Marja’s Club begins on 26th October 2026.
Together we will explore Method Putkisto’s six breathing techniques, paying particular attention to the diaphragm and the relationship between breathing, posture and body alignment. You will learn to recognise your own breathing patterns, release unnecessary tension and discover more space, mobility and freedom within your body.
Let’s enjoy our breathing space – see you soon,
